The UMOnline Instructional Design & Development team supports faculty and departments with the design and development of online courses and programs. We provide consulting services and workshops relative to the following:

• Policies and procedures
• Barrier-free learning
• Online pedagogy
• Technology-enhanced learning
• Moodle instructional tools

Spring/Summer 2012

Listed below is the calendar of face-to-face training sessions offered during Spring Semester 2012.

Click here to request a Moodle Course Supplement or go the UMOnline website under Faculty Resources and select Moodle Course Supplement Request. If you are teaching a fully online course, a course shell will be automatically generated for you and there is no need to use the supplement request link.

The Innovation Studio is now open for faculty to come in and get one-on-one assistance with Moodle and a host of multimedia.  Our staff of Media Art students can create graphics, audio, and video and work with you to add interactive elements to your online courses and course supplements. Open Monday through Friday from 10:00 to 4:00, you can drop by or contact Justin Lewis, Lindy Jones, or Zach Reiter to arrange a session.

Moodle Workshops Descriptions - Sign up above

Moodle Basics: This session introduces participants to the layout, navigation, course settings, and file management of a Moodle course. Participants will have hands-on practice adding content to a course shell and learning the basics of setting up assignments, forums, and quizzes. No previous experience with online learning management systems required.

Managing Your Moodle Gradebook: This session looks at the tools of the Moodle gradebook. Participants will learn how to set up the gradebook and manage student grades online.

NEW! Creating a Moodle Course Supplement: This session is for those who are setting up an online course supplement for their face-to-face course. We will discuss best practices for using an online supplement and share ideas for providing a variety of resources to support your course. Participants will have hands-on practice adding content, designing assignments, developing forums, building quizzes, and setting up the gradebook. Basic familiarity with Moodle is highly suggested--taking Moodle Basics would be a great way to prepare for this workshop. Please request a course supplement at least 24 hours prior to this workshop.

NEW! Tips for Cleaning Up Your Course for the New Semester: This session is for those who have already taught a fully online course or used an online supplement for a face-to-face course. We will discuss best practices for course design to improve the organization and functionality of your course. We will look at ways to increase student engagement and allow you to work more efficiently in the online course environment. Participants are encouraged to share ideas and strategies that have worked well for them. Please have your course shell(s) available for hands-on work. To move course content from a previous semester to a new course shell, please see the Course Maintenance for Instructors resource.

Basic knowledge of using Moodle is a prerequisite for most IT Short Courses.

NEW! Designing Your Moodle Course with Page Format: This session will explore the Page Format option for course layout in Moodle. Page format provides a very flexible design to give a customized look to your course. Offered: Tuesday, April 17, 1:00-2:30, Todd 210 and Tuesday, June 5, 10:00-11:30, Todd 210.

NEW! Designing an Accessible Online Course: This course acquaints participants with universal design and accessibility issues that pertain to online course development. Participants will create accessible content with Moodle tools and with commonly-used course applications (Word, Powerpoint, etc.), and will also explore inclusive uses of multimedia and social media in online course environments. Offered: Wednesday, June 27, 10:00-11:30, Todd 210.

Creating Quizzes in Moodle: This session examines Moodle's quiz features. Participants will develop a question bank, populate a quiz with questions, and examine grading features for quiz types. Discussion will also cover importing questions and generating certificates of completion. Offered: Thursday, February 2, 1:00-2:30, Todd 210.

Advanced Moodle Tools: This session explores some of the advanced Moodle tools, such as Books, Groups, Choice, and Questionnaire. Participants will build samples of these modules and discuss their pedagogical use to enhance the student learning experience--whether you are teaching a fully online course or using a course supplement. Offered: Wednesday, February 8, 1:00-2:30, Todd 210.

Using the Moodle Gradebook: This session looks at the tools of the Moodle gradebook. Participants will learn how to set up the gradebook and manage student grades online. Offered: Wednesday, February 22, 2:00-3:30, LA 139.

Using Blocks in Your Moodle Course: The session will explore options for creating blocks to provide additional functionality, such as RSS feeds and widgets, to your Moodle course. Offered: Friday, March 23,12:00-1:30, Todd 210.

  

Additional Instructional Design and Development Support

Open Labs: Open Labs are an opportunity for instructors to get specific one-on-one advice on using Moodle in their particular teaching/learning context. Sessions will center on the needs of the participant, and it is assumed the participant has had some training in Moodle. (If you need basic training in Moodle, please sign up for a Moodle Basics session first.) Please contact Nancy Clouse (243-5815) or Marlene Zentz (243-6434) to schedule an Open Lab session and indicate your specific issues so we can address your needs as efficiently as possible.

Web Conferencing Training: This training will acquaint you with how to use a web-based meeting tool to enhance the interactivity of your online course for real-time and recorded meetings and presentations, as well as virtual office hours. Participants will develop navigation and facilitation skills and learn to set up sessions for your online course or supplement. Virtual Location: Contact Nancy Clouse (243-5815) or Marlene Zentz (243-6434) for meeting location and time. Note: Headset required.

Transition or Transformation: Implementing a New LMS, August 13, 2010

Inspired by a number of discussions at the Annual Conference on Distance Teaching and Learning in Madison, Wisconsin, we consider the process of transitioning from a proprietary learning management system such as Blackboard to an open source system such as Moodle. Keith Lynip, director of Extended Learning Services at The University of Montana, discusses the nature of this process from the request for information from vendors to the selection of an open-source provider. Questions such as how to support faculty in this transition/transformation process are addressed.
